EQUANS are recruiting for a Mechanical Contracts Manager to be based in Belfast. This is a permanent full-time role working 40 hours per week. On offer is a competitive salary and benefits package.
General Overview
The Mechanical Contracts Manager is responsible for the overall management and successful delivery of contracts within a defined region / operating unit. This role involves leading a team of supervisors and operatives to ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the required standards of quality and safety. The Mechanical Contracts Manager is also responsible for client relationships, financial management, and ensuring that all work complies with legal and regulatory requirements. The role plays a key part in driving operational efficiency, client satisfaction, and business growth.
The Mechanical Contracts Manager holds a middle management position and is critical to the successful execution of the heating contracts. This role directly influences the company’s operational performance, financial outcomes, and client satisfaction. The Mechanical Contracts Manager’s decisions and leadership significantly affect the company’s reputation, profitability, and ability to secure future contracts.
The role of a Mechanical Contracts Manager involves high-level decision-making and problem-solving. The position requires the ability to manage complex projects with multiple stakeholders, tight deadlines, and financial constraints. The Mechanical Contracts Manager must balance technical, financial, and operational considerations, making strategic decisions to ensure successful project outcomes. While the role requires independence in decision-making, more complex issues, such as significant financial risks or strategic shifts, are escalated to senior management.
Key Accountabilities
- Contract Management: Oversee the delivery of all heating contracts within the assigned region or portfolio. Ensure that all contractual obligations are met and that projects are delivered to the highest standards of quality, safety, and client satisfaction.
- Team Leadership: Manage, mentor, and develop a team of Supervisors and site operatives. Foster a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and high performance.
- Client Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, ensuring clear communication and alignment on project goals, timelines, and expectations. Act as the primary point of contact for all client-related matters.
- Financial Management: Manage project budgets, ensuring that work is delivered within financial constraints. Monitor costs, approve expenditures, and work with the commercial team to maximize profitability.
- Operational Efficiency: Drive operational excellence by optimizing resource allocation, streamlining processes, and ensuring that projects are delivered on time and within scope. Implement best practices and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance service delivery.
- Health and Safety Compliance: Ensure that all work is conducted in compliance with the company’s health and safety policies and legal requirements. Conduct regular audits and inspections to maintain a safe working environment.
- Risk Management: Identify and manage risks associated with project delivery, including technical, financial, and contractual risks. Develop and implement mitigation strategies to safeguard the company’s interests
- Quality Assurance: Oversee quality control processes, ensuring that all work meets the required standards and that any issues are addressed promptly. Ensure that the delivery team adheres to company policies, procedures, and industry regulations.
- Reporting and Documentation: Provide regular reports on project progress, financial performance, and key issues to senior management. Ensure accurate and timely documentation of all project-related activities.
- Business Development Support: Contribute to business development by identifying opportunities for contract extensions, additional work, or new client relationships. Support the bidding and tendering process as needed.
- Strategic Planning: Contribute to the development of the company’s strategic goals and objectives, providing insights and recommendations based on contract performance and market trends.
- Any other management duties as required.

Who are we looking for?
Skills & Competencies
Essential
- NVQ or equivalent qualification in HVAC, or a related field.
- Gas safe qualified.
- OFTEC qualified.
- SMSTS
- First Aid certification, Asbestos Awareness, Working at Height, Scaffold Inspection, and other relevant health and safety qualifications.
- CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card – black / white
- Experience in a supervisory role within the gas/mechanical industry.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical methods, materials, and industry practices.
- Understanding of health and safety regulations and best practices in the gas industry.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with clients, operatives, and subcontractors.
- Proven ability to manage resources and coordinate on-site activities effectively.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make decisions under pressure.
- Proficiency in basic IT skills, including the use of project management software.
Desirable
- NVQ Level 3 in plumbing & heating.
- Gas safe qualified.
- OFTEC qualified.
- First Aid certification.
- Experience working within the social housing sector.
