Equans is looking for a Head of Technical Support to join the team covering the North of England on a permanent basis. This is a full-time role working 40 hours per week. On offer is a competitive salary, company vehicle or allowance, bonus and benefits package.
The Head of Technical Support provides technical and engineering leadership across a defined cluster of contracts, ensuring that compliance, assurance, and operational support are delivered consistently and effectively. The role combines personal responsibility as an Authorising Engineer (AE) with the leadership of a multi-disciplinary AE team, ensuring that Safe Systems of Work are robustly implemented and compliance obligations are fully met.
Reporting to the Regional Technical Director, the post holder acts as the trusted technical advisor for cluster operations, bridging the gap between divisional governance and day-to-day contract delivery. They play a key role in supporting operational teams, strengthening compliance, and ensuring that technical standards, policies, and Safe Systems of Work are applied consistently across all contracts.
This role is central to raising engineering standards, assuring technical governance, and supporting client priorities such as lifecycle planning, handback preparation, and continuous improvement. By leading a team of subject matter experts while also discharging their own AE duties, the Head of Engineering promotes a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and accountability that enables safe, reliable, and efficient service delivery.
What will you deliver?
- Act as Authorising Engineer (AE) within the cluster, discharging personal AE responsibilities across designated disciplines while ensuring Safe Systems of Work are implemented, maintained, and audited
- Lead, manage, and develop the cluster AE team, ensuring consistent application of technical standards, compliance requirements, and best practice across all contracts
- Provide trusted technical support and advice to Regional Directors and Account Directors, ensuring that operational teams have access to clear guidance, assurance, and escalation pathways on complex technical matters
- Deliver and oversee technical training, assessments, and appointments in line with EQUANS Safety Rules and statutory requirements, supporting the professional development of colleagues and strengthening in-house capability
- Conduct technical audits in accordance with relevant standards (HTMs, British Standards, and EQUANS Technical Rules), providing clear feedback and supporting operational teams to address findings
- Support the procurement, commissioning, and management of key service providers, providing technical oversight and assurance that services meet statutory and contractual requirements
- Lead or support technical investigations within the cluster, including incident reviews, root cause analysis, and corrective actions, ensuring lessons learned are embedded and shared
- Support operational teams in preparing for lifecycle events, asset replacement, and PFI handback, providing technical assurance and guidance to mitigate compliance risks and strengthen client confidence
- Contribute to the development and practical implementation of divisional technical policies, procedures, and guidance notes, ensuring they are understood and applied consistently across contracts

Who are we looking for?
- Educated to degree level in engineering, or equivalent through extensive technical experience
- Demonstrable Authorising Engineer (AE) competence in one or more disciplines (electrical HV/LV, mechanical, water hygiene, pressure systems, fire, etc.), with experience of carrying personal AE responsibility
- Strong background in Facilities Management across multiple sectors, including healthcare (HTMs), industrial, education, and corporate environments
- Proven leadership and management experience, including line management of technical specialists, coaching, and professional development
- Commercially astute, with an understanding of the compliance and financial implications of technical decisions, particularly in PFI and private sector contracts
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office and CAFM systems, able to produce clear reports and analyse compliance/asset data
- Strong practical understanding of building engineering systems and the operational challenges faced by Authorised and Responsible Persons, with the credibility to support and guide APs and contract teams
This role includes a DBS Standard check therefore ability to pass is essential.
