Equans is looking for a Lead BI Developer to join our team in on a permanent basis. This is a full-time role working 37.5 hours per week. On offer is a competitive salary, company vehicle or allowance, bonus and benefits package.
Data and automation are at the heart of our Equans company vision. We are seeking a talented and experienced BI Developer to join our team, putting data in the hands of those who need it to make informed decisions and improve operational efficiency. This senior lead developer role, specialising in Power BI, is pivotal in shaping and standardising reporting practices across the business.
While you may not directly own all reports, you will play a critical role in influencing BI best practices, driving alignment, and securing buy-in from diverse end-user groups. As a senior member of the team, your expertise will be essential in developing both existing and new BI solutions—from data extraction through to end-user visuals.
You will also coach and support team developers to embed best practices, helping to elevate the overall capability of the BI function. Given the variety of user groups and skill levels across the organisation, your up-to-date knowledge of the latest Power BI features will be key in fostering a community of best practice, maintaining a well-governed, scalable, and sustainable reporting environment for the entire business.
What will you deliver?
- Service delivery
- Oversee the delivery of reporting and triaging of work requests to agreed SLA
- Monitor service, log incidents and support action tracking to safeguard reporting services
- Monitor capacity and drive optimisation of the service
- Act as key liaison to Data Engineers for incident resolution and continuous improvement to platform
- Driving Value Add BI
- Drive the use of Power BI away from static data extracts towards dynamic, insight-driven dashboards and reports
- Engage with end users to translate business requirements into fit-for-purpose, actionable BI solutions
- Influence and standardise reporting practices across the business to promote alignment and gain user buy-in
- Subject Matter Expert
- Coach developers and act as a point of escalation for complex development, queries and/or senior stakeholder engagement
- Oversee deployment activities ensuring quality checks and development standards are maintained: take a lead in fault finding and coaching developers where required
- Drive the community of practice / centre of excellence setting out best practice techniques and clear expectations to team on the use of data within Power BI
- Support the delivery of team events including training; live demos; skills workshops
- Governance
- Create and maintain governance standards across the Power BI platform including data dictionaries; coding and development standards; modelling and data lineage; version control
- Support the design, maintenance and promotion of end user guides and support material
- Drive consistency and standardisation of Power BI use both in the EDM team and across wider end user community

Who are we looking for?
- Strong SQL for data manipulation and extraction
- Expert (and shaping strategy) in all aspects of Power BI development including:
- Warehouse and Lakehouse principles
- Fabric and use of data pipelines
- Power BI data modelling
- Data analysis expressions (DAX)
- Power Query
- Expert (and shaping strategy) in all aspects of the Power BI environment and administration including:
- Ensure gateways function correctly
- Create and manage workspaces
- Maintain access and ensure data security
- Monitor capacity & optimise environment
- Knowledge of database design principles
- Knowledge of ETL processes
- Advanced skills in coding languages (E.g., SQL; DAX)
- Ability to create insight driven Business Intelligence solutions (dynamic data visualisations)
- Ability to take end user requirements and deliver fit for purpose solutions that meet business need
- Demonstratable experience in driving technical direction and best practice in Power BI
- Evidence of coaching colleagues and end users with varied technical capabilities

Proven experience of problem solving and analytical thinking: being able to break complex problems into smaller simpler problems and then recombine
