Equans Solar & Storage has been active in the Japanese market for over 10 years, successfully leading large-scale solar projects as EPC Consortium Leader alongside local partners.

Globally, the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) market is experiencing rapid growth, with momentum accelerating in Japan. Leveraging its proven track record, Equans Solar & Storage Japan (ESS Japan) is increasingly approached by Western developers to act as EPC Contractor for BESS projects.

Japan’s market landscape is shifting : standalone solar projects are gradually being replaced by BESS projects or hybrid solutions integrating photovoltaic (PV) and BESS technologies.

To capitalize on the BESS opportunity, Equans Solar & Storage has defined a strategic roadmap aimed at becoming a recognized leader in this sector within Japan. The company plans to deliver multiple concurrent projects in partnership with key stakeholders, either as joint venture members or subcontractors.

Equans’ ambition in Japan is to build a robust organizational structure that achieves an average annual turnover of €20 million within 2 years, scaling to €50 million within 5 years, while maintaining profitability above 7%.

In this context, Equans Solar & Storage is seeking a Managing Director to lead and expand the Japanese team, driving growth and operational excellence to meet these short- and mid-term objectives.

What you’ll be leading

Represent ESS in Japan and lead the company’s strategic development and operational execution

Report directly to the Head of Operations for ESS based in France

Implement ESS’s strategy locally, forging strong partnerships with Japanese stakeholders to collaborate on strategic projects

Develop the local commercial and operational structure

Initially oversee two direct reports: a Business Development Manager and a Project Director responsible for operational setup

Define and adapt the operational organization on a case-by-case basis in alignment with agreements made with local partners

The profile we’re looking for

• Bi-cultural fluency: proficient in both Japanese and Western business cultures
• Strong background in infrastructure or construction, with experience managing turnkey EPC projects
• Strategic thinker with servant-leadership skills to empower project teams
• Dedicated to operational excellence and safety, passionate about delivering complex projects and leading multidisciplinary teams
• Excellent negotiation and interpersonal skills within multicultural environments
