Join Equans, a leading energies and services contractor and a proud member of the global industrial group, Bouygues. With a rich history of excellence in designing, constructing, and maintaining buildings and critical infrastructure worldwide, we are now offering an exciting opportunity for a General Operative within our Connected Cities business based from our office in Welwyn but will involve covering sites across parts of London.

Key activities

 

1. Installation & Maintenance Support

  • Undertake the installation, repair, and maintenance of street lighting assets, including columns, lanterns, cabling, EV Charge points and control equipment.
  • Undertake fault-finding activities and carry out basic electrical checks.

2. Safety Compliance

  • Follow all safety policies, risk assessments, and method statements when working on highways and electrical systems.
  • Use PPE correctly and promptly report hazards, near misses, or unsafe conditions.

3. Worksite Preparation & Support

  • Prepare tools, equipment, and materials needed for site tasks.
  • Maintain clean, safe, and organised work areas and vehicles.

4. Record Keeping

  • Assist with accurate recording of work completed, materials used, and asset information using handheld devices or job sheets.

5. Customer & Public Interaction

  • Behave professionally when interacting with the public, colleagues, or contractors on site.
  • Represent the organisation positively, ensuring minimal disruption to road users and communities.

6. Quality & Standards

  • Carry out tasks to the required technical and quality standards to BS7671
  • Report defects, asset issues, or installation concerns promptly.

Skills, qualifications & experience

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths, English, and Science – Grade 4/C or above.
  • Willingness to progress and learn new skills and obtain relevant qualifications
  • ECS Card.
  • Full Clean UK driving licence.
  • BS7671 Level 2,
  • BS7671 Level 3,
  • 2391 Electrical test & Inspection,
  • 714 Test & Inspection
  • Awareness of street lighting components such as lanterns, photocells, drivers, control gear, and columns.
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and basic electrical test equipment.
  • Competence in working at height and using access equipment (e.g., ladders, MEWPs).
  • Strong awareness of safe working practices, including PPE, risk assessments, and method statements.
